Voice of Hope: A Step Towards Change

Introduction: Shedding Light on Unseen Struggles

Migration is often a journey of survival, undertaken by those seeking better opportunities. Yet, for many, it leads to relentless struggles and hardships. In a recent initiative, the Abhayudaan Foundation, supported by PulseTaj Impact, conducted a visit to connect with migrant workers who live in challenging conditions. Led by Tajagna Vyas (Founder of PulseTaj and Member of Abhayudaan Foundation) and Meet Makhaniya (Mechanical Design Engineer at Mott MacDonald Pvt. Ltd.), this visit aimed to better understand the reality of their lives and explore ways to support these communities.

The Visit: A Firsthand Look into Their Lives

During the visit, the team engaged with approximately 40 to 50 individuals, comprising 10 to 15 families. These families have migrated from various states and now live in temporary shelters with limited access to basic resources.

  1. Men: The men primarily work on streets and footpaths, selling goods like toys, fruits, and other items to earn daily wages.
  2. Women: A handful of women stay back to safeguard their belongings, cook meals, and care for children. Their dedication to maintaining some semblance of stability for their families was inspiring.
  3. Children: Tragically, children assist in selling goods instead of attending school. Their innocence is overshadowed by the necessity to contribute to their families’ survival.

Despite their dire circumstances, these families displayed remarkable unity, dividing responsibilities and supporting each other like one cohesive family. Their resilience is a reminder of the strength of human spirit.

Why This Visit Matters

The visit was conducted to achieve the following objectives:

  1. Understanding the Struggles
    The primary goal was to observe the challenges faced by migrant workers firsthand, such as unstable incomes, lack of education, inadequate healthcare, and substandard living conditions.

  2. Raising Awareness
    By documenting and sharing their stories, the Abhayudaan Foundation seeks to inspire empathy and action among individuals, corporates, and other organizations.

  3. Driving Change
    This visit serves as a foundation for developing initiatives aimed at addressing their pressing needs, including healthcare camps, education programs, and skill development workshops.

Key Observations

The following issues were identified during the visit:

  1. Educational Deprivation
    Most children in these families do not attend school, as they assist their parents in earning a livelihood.

  2. Healthcare Access
    Migrants have limited or no access to healthcare facilities, leaving them vulnerable to diseases and illnesses.

  3. Economic Instability
    These families rely on daily earnings, making their financial situation precarious and unpredictable.

  4. Poor Living Conditions
    They live in makeshift shelters without proper sanitation, water supply, or electricity.

Stories That Moved Us

  • Geeta’s Resolve: A mother of three, Geeta dreams of sending her children to school, even as she cooks meals and safeguards their temporary home. Her strength is a testament to hope amidst adversity.
  • Ravi’s Aspirations: Eight-year-old Ravi helps his father sell toys but expresses a longing to learn and attend school. His story is a poignant reminder of the opportunities that many children are denied.

These stories reflect the struggles and aspirations of thousands of migrant workers across the country.
